Cameron Park, Brownsville/Matamoros Mission Project
San Felipe de Jesus Catholic Church
Religious & Social Needs:
San Felipe de Jesus Catholic Church serves Cameron Park, a neighborhood just outside of Brownsville, Texas. In 2005 the US Census designated Cameron Park as the, “poorest community in the USA“. People who subsist in this area are hard working but have to decide to spend money on a few hours of electricity or a little food. Yet they provide help to friends/family right across the border in Matamoros where people live in garbage dumps like we see exist in Brazil and India on TV. But it is not Brazil or India. It is in and near our own backyard in Texas!
The Catholic School, lay medical ministries, lay/religious outreach and formation ministries that serve Cameron Park and Matamoros are overwhelmed and desperately need help from more prosperous congregations! They are treating the human side of immigration that has no politics. Specifically, support goods and supplies are needed for the school and for Spanish/English faith formation activities.
Knowledge of this need came to our Lay Marist group via information provided by one of our vowed, Fr. Hector Cruz, S.M., the Pastor of San Felipe de Jesus who is a Marist Priest and from a Marist Lay person who works with the lay ministries in the Cameron Park area, Alicia Gomez.
St. Anthony's Lenten Childrens' Formation Outreach Project:
K - 6th Grades of St. Anthony's Faith Formation program will participate in a project to help the childrens' After School Program at the Parish School in Cameron Park. The Marists will be responsible for organizing, collection and distribution to San Felipe de Jesus Church. Anyone interested in helping should call Bob Spruce (936-689-4515) or Roxane Gautreau at 281-255-3958.
